SHOULD YOU MICROCHIP YOUR DOG?

The short answer is yes! The government has made microchipping of all dogs over 8 weeks old compulsory.

Firstly, what is a microchip? It is a small electronic chip that is inserted into your dog, around the scruff of the neck. It usually takes seconds to insert so there is no excuse not to get your furry companion fitted with one.

In fact, as of the 6th of April 2016, it is compulsory (in England and Wales) for owners to ensure that their dog is microchipped and wearing an ID tag. If your dog is found without the chip, you will be given 21 days to get your dog fitted with one. Failure to comply could result in a £500 fine and possible criminal prosecution. Around 102,000 dogs are picked up off the street or get stolen every year, you never know when it can be your dog. So, this simple procedure is vital.

Microchipped dogs are 2.5 times more likely to be returned to their owners than those who are not microchipped – according to Science Daily.

WILL MICROCHIPPING HURT MY DOG?

The short answer is no. It is a quick procedure that does involve a needle so they will feel a little pinch, but most dogs do not even notice. After being microchipped, we recommend you keep an eye on your dog for a bit in case they have a reaction to it. If they do, contact your vet immediately.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY DOG’S DETAILS?

Firstly, you need to find your dog’s microchip number. It is between 10-15 digits and can include letters. This can be located on some paper and certificate that you should have received when your dog was microchipped. If you are having trouble finding the number, contact your vet, they should have a copy of it.

Next, you need to find out what database the microchip is stored on. You might still have this if you still have the paperwork and certificate, you received when your dog was first microchipped. If you cannot find this information, then the website check-a-chip.co.uk should guide you.

Finally, just update the details. There could be an administration fee charged by the microchip company for updating your details. Other companies may offer an upgrade to a paid plan that will allow unlimited updates.

DOES A MICROCHIP PROVIDE PROOF OF OWNERSHIP?

No. Not the microchip itself. Which is why you should keep a hold on to other documents and paperwork for your dog.

The long-term benefits and the simplicity of the procedure outweigh the rare possibility of the side effects massively. So, make sure your dog is microchipped ASAP and register at Loststolendog.com.
